What happens when you leave everything behind \u2013 take your bicycle and just ride?<\/em> This is a story about trust, exhaustion, joy, and everything in between. A journey that wasn\u2019t always beautiful, but always real. A reminder that sometimes, the road knows more than we do.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Sounds romantic, doesn\u2019t it? Two people, two bicycle, 33 countries, 30,000 kilometers \u2013 and countless times the same question: \u201cSo\u2026 where are you from?\u201d \u2013 \u201cGermany.\u201d \u2013 \u201cBy bicycle??!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was it romantic? Yes. As romantic as wet tent tarps, smelly shoes, sticky muesli bars at six in the morning \u2013 and the eternal search for a shower. (Spoiler: sometimes there just isn\u2019t one.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We set off without a plan B <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

but with a pump, a tent, and a lot of idealism. Two people, two bicycle, a lot of curiosity \u2013 and the naive belief that cycling around the world might help us understand it better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What followed: sandstorms, heat, cold, rain. Border officials with \u2013 and without \u2013 a sense of humor. Falls (mental and physical), street dogs, starry skies, existential crises and shockingly good (and bad) food. But out there, somehow everything tastes good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We sweated through deserts, cursed through monsoon rains, improvised at border posts, fixed fuel stoves, patched tires and bags, challenged GPS devices \u2013 and kept going, somehow. Sometimes even in style. We never wanted to become the clich\u00e9 long-haired world travelers with incense and overly long beards. Still \u2013 20kg bicycle, 30kg luggage\u2026 it adds up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did we do it? Honestly \u2013 no idea. Midlife crisis? Wanderlust? Because we could? Because we thought: it\u2019s now or never? Probably all of the above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what did we find?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

More than would fit into an entire cycling gear catalogue. It wasn\u2019t always nice. But most of the time, it was amazing. And when it wasn\u2019t, it was at least so absurd that we could laugh about it later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t a heroic tale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But maybe it shows that it\u2019s worth setting off \u2013 with open eyes, a repair kit in your pocket, and the quiet trust that life on the road often has more to offer than any planned-out future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now \u2013 back on German soil, our bicycle and faces weathered, new wrinkles on old dreams \u2013 we\u2019d like to tell you a little about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not to inspire you (okay, maybe a little), but because life\u2019s too good for \u201cH\u00e4tte, h\u00e4tte, Fahrradkette\u201c. So here we go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just go<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

About a quiet idea that became a decision \u2013 and the slow goodbye to a seemingly perfect life. We didn\u2019t wait for the perfect moment. It didn\u2019t exist. But at some point, two years before we left, we made a decision \u2013 still fragile, but real. And then we started telling people. And with every conversation, every curious look, every nod, it became more and more real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I asked Klaus in 2020 if we were still going to do this trip around the world by bicycle, he said: \u201cNah. Everything\u2019s so good right now.\u201d<\/em> And he was right. We had great jobs, friends and family nearby, Berlin was amazing \u2013 and our apartment was incredible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I laughed and said: \u201cOne day I\u2019ll be lying on my deathbed saying: But hey, I had a great apartment.\u201d<\/em> That\u2019s when it clicked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because the life we were living was wrong. It wasn\u2019t. It was good. But it was also comfortable. Predictable. Safe. And deep down, there was this quiet restlessness. That pull in the chest when you look at a map. That desire to go deeper. To not just see<\/em> the world, but feel<\/em> it. So we made a decision. Not a grand, brave act \u2013 more like a quiet pact with ourselves: We\u2019ll do this. Even if it scares us. Especially<\/em> because it scares us. And so the goodbye began. Not all at once \u2013 more like a slow tide pulling away. We decluttered, planned, saved, tested our gear. And at some point, there was no way back. Just the road ahead. No courage, just movement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Why the beginning wasn\u2019t heroic \u2013 just hard. And why it\u2019s easier to train your body than your mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Were we afraid? Not really. But we were tired. The first weeks were tough. We barely made progress. Physical struggles are one thing \u2013 mental ones are harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When everything got shaky<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After Klaus\u2019s heart attack in Dubai, everything was suddenly uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wasn\u2019t even sure it was a heart attack \u2013 or whether anything would continue at all. Still, we kept cycling \u2013 through the desert from Dubai to Al Ain, almost to the border with Oman. It was hot, exhausting, and empty \u2013 with a cloud of doubt hanging over us.<\/p>\n\n\n

In Al Ain, we saw a doctor. He called in the evening and said: Klaus should go to the hospital immediately \u2013 his blood showed markers clearly indicating a heart attack. The next day, Klaus had two stents inserted. The diagnosis: six to eight weeks off. No bicycle. No adventure. We took the bus to Muscat, Oman\u2019s capital \u2013 and had a stroke of luck: a cyclist friend offered us his apartment for the recovery. A quiet, hot place \u2013 perfect for slowing down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We eased back in. A swim. Short rides. A bit of jogging. Klaus realized: it works. A little more each day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six weeks later, we boarded including our bicycle a ship to India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the journey continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning from those who have less<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We learned a lot on this trip \u2013 but the most valuable lessons didn\u2019t come from landscapes, temples or landmarks. They came from people. From those who often had far less than we did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People who lived in simple homes, got by with little money, with few options \u2013 and still welcomed us with a smile and hospitality, no questions asked. At first, we thought our way of traveling \u2013 simple, with bicycles and a tent \u2013 might bring us \u201ccloser\u201d to their lives. But it didn\u2019t. As open and honest as these encounters were: we always had options. We could move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For us, it was an adventure. For them, it was life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That realization wasn\u2019t comfortable \u2013 but it was necessary. It taught us to travel with more humility and awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we learned something else:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young people will shape the future. It\u2019s the old ones who want to go backwards. Young people fight for change. The past wasn\u2019t always better. In fact, it rarely was. But that\u2019s another story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just the two of us<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What did we learn about ourselves? A lot. But most importantly: we can do this. Together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three years, 24\/7. No retreat, no routine, no breaks from each other. And yet \u2013 or perhaps because of it \u2013 a deep, unconditional trust grew. Of course, we had our moments. Hormones went wild. We were tired, overwhelmed, annoyed \u2013 at the world, the headwind, and yes, sometimes each other. We were dirty, sweaty, covered in sand, salt, sunscreen \u2013 and often days without a proper shower. Still \u2013 or maybe because of that \u2013 curling up next to each other at night felt like the best thing in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n

So familiar. So quiet. So real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can\u2019t plan the kind of happiness that comes from having someone by your side who makes all this possible. It grew. On dusty roads, under foreign skies, in tents, on ferries, through lonely nights and overflowing days. Our relationship didn\u2019t just become more stable \u2013 it became softer, warmer, more genuine. And strong. Always. And when things get hard, when thoughts get heavy \u2013 it\u2019s never because of him. It\u2019s me. Because in the end, it\u2019s always just a thought, or a feeling. And I alone decide whether to stay in the cloud \u2013 or let the light in again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The courage to begin<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can\u2019t teach anyone courage. We didn\u2019t have it either \u2013 not at first. We just set off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No big plan. No fears. No heroic stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just one step at a time. Kilometer by kilometer. And along the way, we learned: it works. You grow \u2013 even when you\u2019re tired. You carry what you need to \u2013 literally and emotionally. Self-trust isn\u2019t a big bang moment. It\u2019s a quiet, ongoing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You fall. You get up. You think you can\u2019t go on \u2013 and then, suddenly, you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can\u2019t read it in books or put it on a checklist. It starts when you take the first step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somehow. Sometime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then you realize: I can do this. Maybe not perfectly. Maybe not like others. But in my own way. And that\u2019s enough. More than enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Back \u2013 and full of stories<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes I can\u2019t believe it myself: Three years later, 30,000 kilometers, 33 countries \u2013 and we roll back into Germany. With the same bicycles we started on \u2013 now held together with duct tape and zip ties. The tires patched, our faces a little more lined, our hair a little greyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we\u2019re back. And full of gratitude. Full of stories, full of moments, full of encounters that shaped us. And full of joy for whatever comes next. Maybe with a little less sand in our shoes \u2013 and the lovely feeling of finding the toothbrush in the same place again, in Berlin. Because that, too, is a luxury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in a way: the beginning of a new journey. Can we inspire others? Maybe. But you can\u2019t teach someone to trust themselves. You just have to go. And then you realize: it works. You fall, get up \u2013 and keep going.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
